Chennai: The Income Tax department has said that assets worth Rs 2,000 crore belonging to the late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s close friend’s Shashikala and her relatives Ilavarasi and Sudhakaran have been seized. In 2017, Shashikala and her relatives’ residences and offices were raided at the same time by 187 Income Tax officials. During the inspections, it was found that Sasikala and his relatives had run a benami company and evaded taxes to the tune of Rs 1,500 crore. Authorities then conducted a thorough investigation and seized Rs 1,600 crore worth of benami assets in November last year. In the wake of this, the Income Tax authorities on Wednesday issued a statement saying that Shashikala and her relatives had recently seized assets worth Rs 2,000 crore belonging to Ilavarasi and Sudhakaran.
